Pottersburg Creek - Remediation - Removal and Destruction of PCB Contaminated Soils

Location: London, ON

A landfill-style soil storage site was constructed as a result of a cleanup of PCB contaminated soil, sediment and debris from the Pottersburg Creek watershed and its adjacent industrial properties during the 1980’s.

The PCB contaminated soil, sediment and debris from the Pottersburg Creek cleanup was contained in a series of four lined storage vaults totaling approximately 36,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil, sediment and debris.

QMLP opened excavations during the removal of PCB contaminated soil, sediment and debris from each vault be covered at all times by means of a structure that provided for the collection of all dust generated from the activities in the area of the open excavation. In order to comply with this requirement QMLP erected two separate steel framed/fabric covered buildings over the vaults, built onto a 3' x 3' structural grade-beam.

Other contingency measures to ensure no off-site impacts included the installation of a truck wash within a third structure designed specifically for this purpose and the asphalting of all site haul roads. Furthermore a complete storm water management program including upgrading of all ditches was undertaken.

All impacted PCB’s soils were loaded to TDG regulated long-haul trucks and transported to a facility located near St. Ambroise, Quebec for complete destruction.

There was significant community engagement throughout the project including, newletters, a website, open houses and consultation with liaison groups. As part of the deliverables, a complete phase 2 was required with the intention of filing for a Record of Site Condition at the end of the project.
