Brownfield Site Remediation and Preparation

Location: Kingston, ON

QMLP was awarded a contract to complete the environmental site remediation and preparation for development of a 0.5 ha property in downtown Kingston.

This high profiles site was the first brownfield development project in Ontario to be completed under the new Ontario Regulation 153/04.

The scope of work included the following:

  • Installation of approximately 130m of a 1.0m wide concrete wall which served the dual purpose of providing an impermeable groundwater flow barrier and a bearing surface for the building’s parking garage. The wall extended from surface to bedrock located approximately 5.0m below surface and was advanced using a bentonite slurry technique;
  • QMLP proposed and executed a waste reduction screening program which removed over 2,500m3 of inert rock from the waste stockpile. This program resulted in a savings of over $200,000, while generating a reusable rock backfill for future phases of the project.
  • Load, haul and off-site disposal of approximately 28,000 tons of impacted soil
  • Demolition, breaking, sorting and recycling of over 2,500m3 of historic concrete and steel structures.
  • Groundwater management including the recovery and on-site treatment of hydrocarbon impacted water using our mobile water treatment system.
